Which are the rainy months

Figure 1 shows the result of that analysis. Since there are only four categories, the seasonal boundaries are quite easy to discern. The West Coast has a winter precipitation peak and most of the rest of the country sees a summer peak — with the notable exception of an area bounded by Central Texas to the Ohio River Valley to the Deep South. Figure 1.

Dot map of wettest climatological season of the year. Wettest Month Unlike the seasonal map, the combined monthly maps are much more difficult to visualize. That being said, it is important to distinguish between a January peak and a December peak for example.

Figures 2 and 3 show the station breakdown by calendar month — one as a dot map and the other as a color scale choropleth map. For example, the spring maximum noted in Figure 1 is shown in Figure 2 to be nearly entirely composed of stations whose wettest month is May. To the west of the May stations, a large area of June stations exist. While the seasonal map showed a significant break in the region, it is relatively minor when looking at the monthly data.

However, a sharp transition to winter peak values exists to the east of the May stations. Again, having the monthly values is important for this type of assessment. Figure 2. As northeast trade winds weaken and southern trade winds strengthen, moist Pacific air flows west.

The rain shadow is reversed. As a result, the Pacific coast is drenched in rain, while the Caribbean coast is sunny and dry. My favorites include:. That depends on when you visit. By late May and June light afternoon showers are common, but mornings are generally sunny.

The rains increase in July and August, making this a good time to visit relatively dry northwest coast. In the Central Pacific, South Pacific and mountains, mornings are generally sunny, but heavy rains are common in the afternoon. There is, however, an important exception to this pattern. Some years veranillo happens in early July. Other years it stretches into early August. The rainy season begins in June and lasts until October. When people talk about the monsoon season, they are referring to the southwest monsoon period, which is the rainy season.

The strong winds bring warm moist air from the Indian Ocean and plenty of rain. The average rainfall in Phuket is about mm or about inches, with the vast majority of it falling within this period. Its hot, humid and wet! Another aspect of the southwest monsoon is that the seas around the island can be quite rough.

Two-metre seas are typical, with many rain squalls. The onset and strength of a monsoon are hard to predict, but once they start the altered winds can remain in place for months. Monsoons can often bring significant rainfall increases but this is dependent on the geography of the particular place. The rain associated with monsoons can differ depending on where you are, but precipitation can sometimes last for days without stopping.

Large expanses of rolling grasslands known as savannas generate their own climate, bringing hot weather all year round. There are distinct dry seasons, where no rain will fall at all for months.

Then short wet seasons, bringing heavy rains most afternoons, with hot, humid conditions throughout the rest of the day.
