As of late, the character has been reduced to a large mutated reptile with little ambition beyond eating Batman. However, in his debut, Killer Croc started off as a far more interesting villain, so much so that some believe his backstory was the true inspiration for Tim Burton's Penguin in Batman Returns. When Waylon Jones was born with a rare scaly skin condition and relentlessly abused, it was only natural he'd become a murdering psychopathic cannibal.

After a quick stint finding acceptance with a traveling circus, he ended up in Gotham City. By letting his condition dictate his life, Croc has transformed himself into one truly scary rogue. Born Roman Sionis, he was the by-product of self-absorbed wealthy parents who cared more about their social standing than his well-being. Because of this, he became obsessed with the idea of masks. After killing them both, he not only inherited the family fortune but took the opportunity to forge a new identity by carving a black mask out of his father's casket and becoming a leader of Gotham's crime world.

While many of Batman's villains resort to over-the-top dramatics and wacky gimmicks to fuel their crimes, the Black Mask retains a creepy dignity rooted in good old-fashioned sadism and the use of a well-fired gun. Any superhero who's worth his cape has got at least one shape-shifting villain.

For Batman, it's Clayface, a hulking mud monster with the ability to reshape his body, turn his limbs into a menagerie of weapons, look like anyone he chooses, and render nearly all forms of physical attack useless by melting. Though his backstory is as shifty as he is, Clayface has provided Batman with a compelling enemy since the '40s.

For a character to count as a Batman villain, I believe they should have a specific super-villain alter ego, engage primarily in villainous activities, and primarily, almost exclusively fight Batman himself… in the mainstream comics continuity.

Beyond the muscled man portrayed in movies, Bane is well gifted as he speaks many languages and knows a lot about science. This guy is somehow immortal and regarded as very intelligent and agile. His name literally means Head of the Demon.

Again, he loves the whole existence of Batman and even tries to convince him to take over leadership of his League of Assassins and marry his daughter when he retires. Carrey, somehow, convinced the filmmakers to go with him for the role that was originally written for Robin Williams and he gave it his best shot. Perhaps the most intellectually challenging enemy Batman ever had, The Riddler is obsessed with riddles, puzzles, and word games, which he uses to give the authorities clues of his impending crimes.

His puzzles and games turn Batman into one badass detective that fans never saw before. A criminal mastermind, Riddler derives joy in challenging Batman intellectually but he has no extraordinary powers and does not belong to the evilest among the league of Batman villains.

Nonetheless, his roles in Batman movies are one of the reasons people love them. This is the only supervillain that made an appearance in all the Dark Knight trilogy as portrayed by Cillian Murphy. He takes credit as the villain who almost broke Batman psychologically by using his fear toxin.

Truly, Scarecrow is as evil as they come, even without superpowers. The evil duo of Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy must be stopped from destroying the city but Batman and Robin are the only ones who can take them out. Poison Ivy was a student of advanced botanical biochemistry before she was forced to consume — or was injected with a poisonous plant that turned her into a ravenous plant.

Now, her only passion and mission on earth are to protect all plants which seems like a noble cause. However, to achieve this goal, she has to end the existence of humans.

Among the villains of Batman, Poison Ivy has a level of her own as what she does can give her power over anyone, including Batman himself. Her relationship with Batman is that of love and hate. Sometimes she is good and other times she is one of the villains of Batman to fear.
